Time to dive into the world of textiles and earn your Textile Merit Badge. During this educational workshop, students will learn all about the world of textiles. We will discuss various types of textiles, provide fabric swatches of natural and synthetic textiles, learn the foundations of braiding and weaving fabric into different items such as place-mats or rugs, review and cover various textile career opportunities. This will be an educational and fun afternoon!

Schedule in detail:

1) Importance of textiles & define the terms below:
    i) Fiber
    ii) Fabric
    iii) Textile
2) Cotton & Wool Swatches (100% Cotton & 100% Wool)
    a) Rayon Fabric Swatch
    b) Origin of Cotton, Wool & Rayon
    c) Yarn to Fabric (sweater, knit hat, etc.)
    d) Buying a new jacket – what type of fabric would you like?
3) Weave example with long strands of fabric
    a) Braid into a place-mat (start in class & finish at home)
4) Explain Terms (10)
5) Advantages & Disadvantages of Natural fibers, animal fibers
    a) Pros & Cons
6) Five Career opportunities in the textile field
